The neuroscience of holding information online

Working memory is the mental workspace where you hold and manipulate information for seconds at a time. Baddeley and Hitch's influential model describes it as a limited-capacity system with a central executive, a phonological loop for verbal material, and a visuospatial sketchpad.

Peer-reviewed research (Jaeggi et al., 2008, PNAS) first linked working memory training to gains in fluid intelligence. Follow-up studies show the clearest transfer is to working memory itself: capacity, updating, and interference resolution all improve with sustained practice.

Imaging work (Olesen et al., 2004; Takeuchi et al., 2010) shows practice rewires the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and parietal circuits - the hardware layer of the working-memory network actually changes.

What working memory is, and what it is not

Working memory is often confused with short-term memory, but they are not the same thing.

Short-term memory is passive storage - holding a phone number for a few seconds until you dial it. Working memory adds manipulation: you hold the information AND do something with it, like keeping the digits in mind while mentally reversing them. That central-executive component is what separates working memory from simple retention, and it is the part most tightly linked to reasoning and learning.

Working memory is also distinct from long-term memory, which is durable storage measured in days to decades. Capacity is famously limited: Miller's classic estimate was about seven items, but Cowan's later work puts the true figure closer to four chunks when rehearsal is prevented. Training does not expand this hard limit much - what improves is how efficiently you use the capacity you have: better chunking, faster updating, and stronger resistance to interference.

Does working memory training actually transfer?

We will not tell you this turns you into a genius. Here is the honest state of the research.

The strong claim - that working-memory training raises general (fluid) intelligence - is genuinely contested. Jaeggi et al. (2008) reported such transfer, but large meta-analyses (Melby-Lervag & Hulme, 2013; Simons et al., 2016) found that far transfer to untrained abilities is small and inconsistent once you account for placebo and active-control groups.

What is well supported is near transfer: train these tasks and you reliably get better at working-memory tasks - capacity, updating, and resisting interference all improve with sustained practice. Imaging studies (Olesen et al., 2004; Takeuchi et al., 2010) show corresponding changes in prefrontal and parietal activity. So the honest promise is a sharper, more reliable working memory and a measurable personal-best you can watch climb - not a guaranteed IQ boost.

How to train working memory the right way

  1. Start with a clean baseline: Run a Test-mode session at your current level to establish where you actually are.
  2. Use Train mode aggressively: Feedback helps you learn patterns. Stay in Train until accuracy is above 80% consistently.
  3. Push one level only when stable: Moving up too early introduces noise. Keep n-back difficulty where you're confident.
  4. 10 minutes daily beats 1 hour weekly: Spaced practice consolidates gains. Skip a day and you regress fast.

Frequently asked questions

Does N-back actually raise IQ?

Working-memory training reliably improves working memory. Transfer to broader IQ is debated - treat the WM gains as the real, dependable benefit.

How long until I see results?

Most people see a personal-best jump within 2-3 weeks of daily 10-minute sessions. A week-4 plateau is normal - push up a level.

Can I use this alongside other cognitive training?

Yes - recommended. Working memory is the scaffold that makes attention and processing-speed training easier.

What should my target score be?
