How memories are formed and retrieved

Short-term and associative memory are distinct systems. Digit span measures the phonological loop. Spatial span (Corsi) measures the visuospatial sketchpad. Paired associates probe the binding of unrelated items into a single episode.

Each subsystem is a separate subtest in the Wechsler Memory Scale - used in clinical neuropsychology since 1945. The tasks here replicate those paradigms.

Mnemonic training (chunking, method of loci) produces dramatic gains. Ericsson's famous case of S.F. reached 80+ digit span with systematic mnemonic practice. Ordinary practice produces smaller but reliable gains.

What memory training really improves

The honest picture on memory training.

Span tasks are durable clinical measures. Strategy training - chunking, the method of loci - produces genuinely large gains: Ericsson's subject S.F. reached an 80+ digit span through systematic mnemonics, far beyond the normal limit.

But that gain is strategy-specific: S.F.'s span for letters stayed normal. Plain repetitive practice yields smaller, reliable improvements. So the biggest wins here come from learning a technique, not just drilling - and capacity for untrained material changes little.

Proven techniques to train memory

  1. Rehearse aloud (silently) during study: Verbal rehearsal extends the phonological loop. It works.
  2. Chunk digits into 3s or 4s: Your span is limited by chunks, not digits. 834-712-465 is three items, not nine.
  3. For spatial tasks, trace a path: Imagine drawing a line through the cells in order - shape memory beats position memory.
  4. Use imagery for paired associates: Picture the two words doing something absurd together. Vivid imagery = vivid recall.

Frequently asked questions

What's a normal digit span?

Forward: 7±2 in adults. Backward is typically 1-2 shorter. Spans above 9 forward or 7 backward are exceptional.

Does memory training work at any age?

Older adults show the largest relative gains from paired-associates training, likely because they have more room to improve binding.

Can I train for competitive memory?

Yes - but you'll outgrow these tasks fast. Competition-level mnemonists use journey method and PAO systems. Start here, then move on.

Why does my span shrink when I'm tired?

Working memory capacity tracks rested-state alertness. A tired-span measurement is real data, just not your true baseline.

What is the difference between short-term and working memory?
