About this exercise

Counting Span (Case, Kurland & Goldberg, 1982) is a complex working memory task that loads both processing (counting) and storage (the running list of counts).

Each round shows multiple arrays - you count, hold, count again, hold the previous count too. At the end, recall all counts in order.

Strongly correlated with reading comprehension and fluid reasoning.

Average adult span is 3-4. Above 5 is exceptional.

The science

Counting span loads heavily on Gf (fluid intelligence) and is part of the working memory factor in psychometric models.

Daneman & Carpenter (1980) showed reading span (similar paradigm) predicts comprehension better than digit span.

What it measures

Your capacity to keep accumulating tallies intact while a competing counting process runs.

This task isolates the storage-versus-processing trade-off at the heart of working memory: each completed count must be parked and protected while the effortful act of enumerating the next display consumes the same attentional resources. Your span reflects how many such fragile sub-totals survive that interference before recall, indexing controlled attention rather than raw counting skill.

Counting span was devised by Case, Kurland and Goldberg to study children, using a processing step (visual enumeration) lighter than reading sentences or solving equations. Compared with operation or reading span, the processing load is more uniform across trials, so individual differences lean more on maintaining and ordering the stored counts than on the difficulty of each interruption.

How to train it effectively

Grow the list length only once a set length feels automatic, never before.

Start at two or three displays per trial and stay there until recall is consistently perfect, then add one display. Focus on cleanly finishing each count and verbally locking the number before the next display appears, rather than rushing the enumeration. Treat the brief gap between displays as deliberate rehearsal time, not dead time.

The classic failure is letting the running count of the current display contaminate a stored total, so a previous "four" drifts to "five". Resist subvocally re-counting old sets; instead chunk the sequence into a short rhythmic chain. If counts blur together, you are enumerating too fast and starving maintenance of attention.

Interpreting your score

Read your span as the longest list you recall in full order, then watch its trend.

Span here is typically the largest set size you can reliably reproduce in correct sequence, often partial-credit weighted by how many counts were right. Because the processing step is gentle, healthy adults usually reach somewhat higher spans than on operation span. Rather than chasing a fixed number, track whether your own ceiling and consistency are creeping upward across sessions.

A single score is state-dependent: fatigue, divided attention, and even counting speed shift it from day to day, so judge yourself on averaged trends, not one run. The span tells you how robust your maintenance is under interference; it does not measure intelligence, arithmetic ability, or how well you will perform on tasks without this storage-while-processing demand.
