About this exercise

Inspired by the classic Simon electronic memory game (1978), this trains auditory + visual sequencing memory.

Each trial plays an increasing-length sequence of tones with synchronized color flashes.

Repeat the sequence by tapping pads. Make a mistake = trial fails.

Multimodal encoding (sound + color) gives a memory boost over single-channel tasks.

The science

Sequence-tapping tasks load on the visuospatial sketchpad and the phonological loop simultaneously.

Performance is sensitive to ageing and is a classic developmental milestone metric.

What it measures

Your ability to hold a string of tones in order and reproduce it exactly.

This task isolates serial-order memory for non-verbal sounds: how many tones you can buffer and, more strictly, whether you preserve their sequence. Your span here reflects the joint limit of auditory short-term storage and the order code that tags each tone to a position, since errors usually come from transpositions rather than forgetting which tones occurred.

Unlike a spatial Simon variant, the cues are pitches rather than locations, so it draws on tonal and pitch-contour memory rather than visuospatial sketchpad resources. It overlaps with the demands of repeating a phone number read aloud or echoing back a melody, but with arbitrary tones that resist easy verbal labelling.

How to train it effectively

Push your span only when you are reliably accurate at the current length.

Start at a length you can clear cleanly, then add one tone only after two or three correct rounds at the current length. Focus on encoding the contour, whether each tone steps up or down, rather than trying to name absolute pitches. Treat the sequence as one rising-and-falling shape, then replay that shape from its first tone.

The frequent mistake is grouping all the tones into one undifferentiated run; chunk them into twos or threes, leaning on the natural pause between groups. Avoid answering before the full sequence finishes, and resist subvocally counting, which crowds the same auditory loop you need to hold the tones in.

Interpreting your score

Read your span as a personal trend, not a fixed number.

Your score is the longest sequence you reproduce in correct order. Most people land in a range broadly comparable to digit span, often around the mid-single digits, though arbitrary tones tend to be harder than nameable digits. The most informative reading is your own moving average across sessions: a steady creep upward signals real consolidation rather than a single lucky run.

Span is strongly state-dependent: fatigue, background noise, and divided attention can cost you a tone or two on any given day, so compare like with like. A high score shows you held and ordered these tones well; it does not certify broad memory, musical pitch ability, or how you will recall meaningful, verbal material.

How to play

  1. Listen + watch the sequence play.
  2. Tap the pads in the same order to repeat.
  3. Each round adds one item. Two consecutive failures end the session.
  4. Headphones recommended for clean tones.
