About this exercise

The memory matrix is a spatial span task - the visuospatial twin of digit span.

A set of cells lights up for a fraction of a second. You then tap every cell you saw.

As you succeed, more cells are added and the grid grows.

Pattern-based encoding (seeing a shape rather than individual dots) is the path to high scores.

The science

Spatial span tasks like Corsi's block-tapping test are reliable predictors of real-world navigation and architectural skill.

Elite performers chunk visual patterns the way chess masters chunk positions.

What it measures

It gauges how many spatial locations you can bind into a single remembered configuration.

This task isolates the storage capacity of visuospatial working memory for location bindings. Unlike remembering a list, you must hold several lit cells as one integrated layout. Your score reflects roughly how many positions you can encode at once before the pattern fragments and individual cells start dropping out of the held image.

It differs from sequence tasks like Corsi block-tapping, where order matters and items arrive one at a time. Here the cells appear simultaneously, so there is no temporal sequence to rehearse, only a static spatial whole. The real-world correlate is briefly glancing at a parking row or seat map and reconstructing where the occupied spots were.

How to train it effectively

Push grid size up gradually and lean on grouping rather than counting cells one by one.

Start at a grid and cell count you clear comfortably, then add one lit cell or expand the grid only after several clean reproductions in a row. During the flash, resist scanning cell by cell. Instead take in the whole field at once and chunk the lit cells into shapes, lines, or clusters that you can hold as a few units.

The common mistake is fixating on one corner to memorise it perfectly, which lets the rest of the pattern fade before you reproduce it. Spread attention across the grid. Also avoid silent verbal labelling like row two, column four; naming positions is slow and crowds out the spatial image you actually need to keep.

Interpreting your score

Read the largest pattern you reliably reproduce, not any single lucky round.

The meaningful number is the cell count or grid size you clear consistently, not your one best attempt. Track that ceiling across sessions. A rising trend means your held configurations are getting denser. Plateaus are normal and expected once you near your personal capacity, since visuospatial storage limits are fairly stable in adults.

Scores swing with state. Fatigue, divided attention, a noisy room, or a small phone screen can each cost you a level on a given day, so compare like with like. The score reflects spatial pattern capacity only; it says nothing about your verbal memory, reasoning, or general intelligence, and it does not predict everyday memory wholesale.
