About this exercise

Paired associates is a classic verbal memory paradigm dating back to Ebbinghaus.

You see pairs of words during a study phase. Later you are given one word as a cue and must pick its partner from alternatives.

The task probes the associative binding of unrelated items — a core building block of episodic memory.

Use mental imagery: picture the two words interacting vividly to boost recall.

The science

Each test is constructed using Item Response Theory (IRT) and Classical Test Theory (CTT) to ensure reliable measurement of knowledge and ability across different difficulty levels.

Questions undergo rigorous review including difficulty calibration, discrimination analysis, and distractor effectiveness evaluation to maintain high assessment quality.

如何玩

  1. Study the word pairs as they appear.
  2. When the test starts, each cue shows and you pick its partner.
  3. Use imagery — picture the two words together vividly.
  4. Don't just re-read; actively link the pairs.
