How the conversion works

IQ and GRE scores are normalised on bell-curve distributions. The conversion maps a person's standing in one distribution to the equivalent standing in the other.

• IQ: mean 100, standard deviation 15.
• GRE (Verbal + Quantitative): mean ≈ 301, standard deviation ≈ 14, based on ETS GRE score reports. Note that this is normed to the graduate-bound population, which is already above the general-population mean.

• IQ-GRE correlation is around 0.7. Because GRE takers are already a selected sample (people pursuing graduate study), GRE scores have a narrower distribution than IQ scores in the general population. The IQ-equivalent of an average GRE score is higher than 100.
• Extreme-tail conversions are less reliable because both tests have fewer calibration cases there.
• No score entered here is stored, submitted, or connected to an account.

What is the GRE, and how does it relate to IQ?

The GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) is a standardized graduate admissions test whose two main sections, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning, are each scored on a 130 to 170 scale, giving a combined total of 260 to 340. Because the GRE measures reasoning, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and quantitative problem solving, it loads heavily on general cognitive ability (g), the same construct IQ tests estimate. Research places the correlation between GRE scores and measured IQ at roughly 0.7 to 0.8, which is high enough to make a GRE total a meaningful, though imperfect, proxy for IQ.

The GRE is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and is used by thousands of graduate and business programs worldwide to compare applicants on a common scale. Each section, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning, is reported in one-point increments from 130 to 170, and a separate Analytical Writing section is scored 0 to 6 in half-point steps. The key thing to understand for any IQ comparison is that GRE scores are normed against people who choose to take the GRE, a self-selected, graduate-school-bound group that already sits well above the general-population average. That is why an "average" GRE total of about 300 to 301 does not map to an average IQ of 100, but to an IQ somewhere in the 108 to 112 range on the standard mean-100, SD-15 scale. The converter on this page accounts for that shift instead of treating the two scales as if they were normed on the same population.

How GRE scores map to IQ

Both IQ and the GRE are built on normal distributions, so the cleanest way to relate them is to match percentiles. A score in one distribution is converted to its standing (percentile), and that percentile is read back onto the other scale.

The critical adjustment is the test population. IQ is normed on the general public with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. The GRE Verbal plus Quantitative total is normed on GRE takers, with a combined mean near 300 to 301 and a standard deviation of roughly 13 to 15 points depending on the score year. Because GRE takers are already a selected, above-average group, a GRE total that is merely average among test takers still corresponds to an above-average IQ in the general population.

Why the GRE is a strong but imperfect IQ proxy

The GRE was not designed to be an IQ test, but it measures overlapping abilities. Verbal Reasoning taps vocabulary, reading comprehension, and verbal analogy-style reasoning. Quantitative Reasoning taps numerical problem solving, data interpretation, and quantitative logic. Together these load strongly on general cognitive ability, the g factor that IQ tests are built to estimate, which is why published correlations between GRE and IQ measures commonly fall in the 0.7 to 0.8 range.

Several factors keep it short of a clean one-to-one conversion:

• Range restriction. GRE takers are self-selected and already above average, so the score distribution is compressed compared to the full IQ range. This is the single biggest reason GRE-to-IQ conversions must shift the mean upward.
• Preparation and coaching. GRE scores can rise with focused study, timed practice, and familiarity with question formats, whereas IQ tests aim to minimize such gains.
• Content coverage. The GRE includes acquired knowledge such as vocabulary and learned math procedures, while many IQ tests weight more heavily toward fluid, culture-reduced reasoning.
• Tail reliability. At the extreme high and low ends, both tests have fewer calibration cases, so conversions there are rougher than near the middle.

Modern GRE versus the pre-2011 200 to 800 scale

If you are comparing scores across years, the scale matters. The current 130 to 170 per-section format was introduced with the GRE revised General Test in August 2011. Before that, each section used a 200 to 800 scale in 10-point increments, the same familiar range used by the older SAT.

When you see an old GRE score, do not plug it into a 260 to 340 converter directly. A pre-2011 score of 600 on a section, for example, does not correspond to 600 on anything in the modern format. ETS published concordance tables to translate old 200 to 800 scores into the 130 to 170 range, and you should run an old score through that concordance first, then compare to IQ.
