Army General Classification Test: one score, five groups.

The US Army's WWII successor to the Alpha and Beta tests evaluated recruits' intelligence and comprehension; 1.75 million men took the original form.2 Each recruit's score was reduced to a group from I to V — one of the first things a classification officer looked at.1

1 · ORIGINS

From WWI literacy screening to WWII classification

WWI testing1917–18
The early emphasis was on literacy: the Alpha test for a heterogeneous group, the Beta for illiterates, and interviews for some.2
WWII needWWII
World War I and II created the need for recruit testing and a large body of test subjects.2
Standard for all recruits1942–43
Administered to all new Army recruits and one of the Army's primary tools for classification and assignment.1
2 · ARMY GRADES I–V

A Roman numeral on the classification form

Each recruit was assigned a Roman-numeral AGCT group from I to V, recorded on a classification form.1

I130+

III90–109
IV70–89
V≤ 69

Band limits as given in a Texas State University thesis.1 Some online summaries give different limits for Group V; we follow the thesis.

3 · HOW THE SCORE WAS USED

What a high or low group meant

I–IIAvoiding the infantryA score in the top categories meant a recruit could, if he wished, avoid the infantry.1
highestFinding leadersBefore deployment, commanders searched for leaders by seeking soldiers with the highest AGCT scores.1
intentTrainabilityThe classification was initially intended to assess a recruit's trainability.1
Criticism. The thesis argues that allocation by AGCT score dominated how recruits were distributed across the three principal Army commands and greatly diminished the initial combat strength of the Ground Forces.1
4 · SIT AT THE CLASSIFICATION DESK

A recruit's score arrives. Which group?

Drag the AGCT standard score. The form shows the group from the thesis's band limits and what the thesis says that group meant.
