The Chinese language

No alphabet, no tenses, no plurals, but four tones that change what a word means. Read the sentence on the right: five syllables, nearly the same sound, one meaningful question.

妈Māma妈 骂mà马mǎ吗ma?
“Is Mum scolding the horse?”mā mother · mà scold · mǎ horse · ma (question). The same sound, three tones and a neutral one. Mandarin is written in characters; the Latin letters are pinyin.

What Chinese is, in short

Chinese is a family of Sinitic languages, part of the Sino-Tibetan family, spoken by about 1.3 billion people. Its standard form, Mandarin (Putonghua), has more native speakers than any other language. It is written with characters, each standing for a syllable with a meaning, rather than with an alphabet.

Characters are built, not drawn

Very few characters are pictures. Most combine parts: a radical that hints at meaning, often joined to a part that hints at sound. Learn the parts and thousands of characters stop being random.

Time changes; the verb doesn't

Mandarin verbs never change form. Time is shown with time words like “yesterday” and small particles like 了 (le) for completion or 过 (guo) for experience. Pick a time and watch only the extra words move.

“I went to Beijing yesterday.”了 marks the action as completed.去 (qù, go) stays exactly the same

Many spoken, one written

The main varieties are often called dialects, but a Cantonese and a Mandarin speaker may not understand each other's speech. They can read the same written standard.

Harder than it looks, easier than you'd think

HARD
TonesA wrong tone changes the word, and English speakers aren't used to hearing pitch as meaning.
Thousands of charactersEach must be learned for shape, sound and meaning. Reading a newspaper takes around 3,000.
HomophonesMandarin has only about 400 syllables (about 1,300 with tones), so many words sound alike.
EASY
No verb endings我去, 他去, 我去了: I go, he goes, I went. The verb never changes.
Logical vocabulary电 (electric) + 脑 (brain) = 电脑, computer. 火 (fire) + 车 (vehicle) = 火车, train.
Simple numbersEleven is 'ten-one' (十一), twenty is 'two-ten' (二十), with no irregular forms.

3,000 years of continuous writing

Chinese is one of the oldest writing systems still in use. A modern reader can recognise many characters carved more than 2,000 years ago.
