Magnus Carlsen

NationalityNorwegian
Test instrumentSelf-reported / press estimate
DocumentationNorwegian press; no confirmed administration

Magnus Carlsen's widely-circulated IQ figure of around 190 is press estimate or self-reported - he has not publicly confirmed any formal psychometric administration. The number is more a speculative ranking than a documented score.

Carlsen was World Chess Champion from 2013 to 2023 and holds the highest classical FIDE rating in history (2882, 2014). He was the youngest player to reach number-one in the world rankings at 19. He is also the only player to hold the world titles in classical, rapid, and blitz simultaneously.

Beyond chess Carlsen has been a public proponent of treating cognitive performance as a trainable expertise rather than a fixed capacity. He has been candid about not knowing his IQ in multiple interviews and has often deflected the question.

Caveat: No documented test administration. The 190 figure is press estimate and should be read accordingly.
