Why a preschool scale, and why then

1967Growing demandSociety and clinics increasingly needed ways to measure early-childhood intelligence.2
1967Built from the WISCThe WPPSI was adapted from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children.7
1972Not aloneThe McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities followed. Preschool tests improved, but they were still less sound than tests for older children.2
1975The law raised the stakesThe Education for All Handicapped Children Act (PL 94-142) required a free public education for all children aged 3 to 21.2

Eleven subtests, two scales, one global score

Like the other Wechsler scales, it treats intelligence as a single global capacity, measured two ways through a Verbal and a Performance scale.1 All eleven original subtests survived into the 1989 revision.5,2

List assembled from the WPPSI-R subtests, which kept all the originals and added Object Assembly.2,1,5 The eleventh original is listed only as "Animal Pegs" or "animals/pegs"; its 1967 name isn't given in these sources. "WPPSI only" means the subtest doesn't appear on our WISC 1949 list.

In 1967, a child of 5 years 6 months could take either the WPPSI or the WISC: the scales overlap here.

WPPSI ranges come from the sources on this page.5,2,6 WISC and WAIS ranges are as documented on our WISC 1949 and WAIS 1955 pages. The chart stops at 20, but the WAIS continues through adulthood.
