Early life and education

Jeffrey Preston Bezos was born January 12, 1964, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was raised largely in Houston and later Miami; his stepfather, Miguel Bezos, was a Cuban immigrant who worked as an engineer for Exxon. As a child Bezos showed strong mechanical and scientific curiosity, spending summers on his maternal grandfather's ranch in Texas and tinkering with hardware and electronics.

He was valedictorian of his high school class in Miami and went on to Princeton University, where he initially studied physics before settling on electrical engineering and computer science. He graduated summa cum laude in 1986 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. After Princeton he worked in finance and computer science roles in New York, ultimately joining the quantitative hedge fund D. E. Shaw & Co., where he rose to senior vice president.

None of this educational record includes a published IQ score. A valedictorian title, summa cum laude honors, and Phi Beta Kappa membership are consistent with high ability, but they are academic facts, not psychometric measurements, and they do not produce a specific number.

Companies and career

In 1994 Bezos left D. E. Shaw and drove to Seattle to start an online bookstore, reportedly writing the business plan along the way. He founded Amazon, which began selling books in 1995 and expanded into a general retailer, then into cloud computing with Amazon Web Services - a business that became a dominant force in enterprise infrastructure and a major profit engine for the company.

Bezos took Amazon public in 1997 and led it for decades, stepping down as CEO in 2021 to become executive chairman. In 2000 he founded the spaceflight company Blue Origin, which has developed reusable suborbital and orbital launch vehicles. He also owns The Washington Post, acquired in 2013. For periods he was the wealthiest person in the world.

This record reflects exceptional analytical discipline, long-term planning, customer obsession, and tolerance for risk. It does not depend on, or reveal, any particular IQ figure.

The IQ question and where the number comes from

For many celebrities a single round figure circulates widely. For Bezos that is not even the case: different "celebrity IQ" list sites cite different unsourced numbers, and many list him with no figure at all. Where a number does appear - sometimes a reverse-inferred figure of around 145 - it carries no citation to a named test (Stanford-Binet, WAIS, a Mensa-administered Cattell), no date, no examiner, and no documented administration.

This is the standard pattern for living-celebrity IQ figures: list-makers work backwards from a person's visible achievements to a plausible-sounding number. That reasoning is psychometrically invalid. IQ is defined as a normed position relative to a population on a specific instrument; it cannot be inferred from a career or a net worth. A person can build one of the largest companies in history without anyone ever having measured their IQ - and in Bezos's case, no one publicly has.

Bezos himself has not claimed a specific IQ in any verifiable record. Absent a published, named, dated test result, the honest answer to "what is Jeff Bezos's IQ" is: unknown - there is no measurement.

Why celebrity IQ numbers are usually wrong

Three recurring problems make figures like this unreliable:

• No instrument. A score has no meaning without the test it came from. A 145 on a high-ceiling research test is a different population position than a 145 on the WAIS-IV.
• No administration. Real scores come from a documented sitting: where, when, scored by whom. Celebrity figures have none of this, and for Bezos there is not even a consistent figure to begin with.
• Reverse inference. Assigning an IQ based on someone being successful is circular - it assumes the conclusion (high ability) and dresses it up as a measurement.
