20 QUESTIONS · 5 TOPICS · GUESS THE CORRELATION · ABOUT 15 MINUTES

Ice-cream sales predict drownings. Ice cream doesn't cause them.

Both rise in hot weather. Statistics is the craft of telling real patterns from coincidence, confounders and spin. Twenty questions, each explained, then test how well your eye reads a scatter plot. No sign-up, nothing saved.

QUESTION 1 / 20 · DESCRIBING DATAEasy

What is the median of 3, 7, 8, 12, 40?

GUESS THE CORRELATION · ROUND 1 OF 6

How strong is the pattern?

The correlation coefficient r runs from −1 (a perfect downward line) through 0 (no pattern) to +1 (a perfect upward line). Each plot is freshly generated. Set the slider to your guess.

Research on this task finds that people tend to underestimate moderate correlations: r = 0.5 looks weaker than it is. Remember that even r = 1 says nothing about which variable causes which.

What this statistics test covers, in short

Twenty multiple-choice questions at upper-secondary to first-year university level, four on each of five topics: describing data, sampling, hypothesis testing, correlation and regression, and misleading statistics. They test both how to calculate and how to interpret.

For the probability behind it, try the probability test. The test is our own and not normed.
