The arithmetic itself is straightforward, but the test is timed tightly and usually permits a calculator, so accuracy and speed at interpretation matter more than advanced technique.
Numerical reasoning is one of the most widely used graduate screening tests, especially in finance, accountancy, banking, consulting, and management schemes where interpreting figures is routine. Publishers such as SHL, Kenexa, and Talent Q supply the versions employers most often set. The skill predicts how confidently someone can read a report, sense check a result, and base a decision on data without being misled.
Analysts, actuaries, buyers, and managers all rely on it daily when judging performance, pricing, and budgets. Because so much of commercial life is communicated through tables and dashboards, employers treat comfort with numerical data as a baseline requirement for roles that involve money or measurement.
To score well, read the question before studying the data so you look only for the figures you need, and check the units and any labels, since values expressed in thousands or as percentages cause frequent errors. Recognise the common calculations quickly: percentage change is the difference divided by the original value, and ratios must be reduced consistently.
Use the calculator for accuracy but estimate first, because a rough figure tells you at once if an answer is implausible. Do not be delayed by data that the question never uses.
