Only the d's with two dashes.

A paper-and-pencil test of sustained attention: 14 rows of "d" and "p" letters, 20 seconds per row, with no break between rows. You cross out only a "d" that has exactly two dashes, whether above, below or split.5,2

Three targets hidden among ten look-alikes

Each character is a "d" or a "p" with one to four dashes above or below it. The three ways a "d" can carry exactly two dashes are the targets. Everything else is a distractor.1

TRY IT · 3 OF 14 ROWS · 20 S PER ROW
Row 1 / 3
—

Work left to right. Tap every d with two dashes.

Each row runs on its own clock and moves to the next row with no pause, as in the original test.2 Tap a character again to unmark it. The test allows 15 or 20 seconds per row depending on the expected level of performance, so you can choose.1

Randomly generated rows in the d2 format. This isn't the test sheet and isn't normed.

Speed is the score to trust

A 2017 study of how the d2 is scored found that the reliability of the error score comes almost entirely from missed targets. Wrong marks were entirely unreliable, and measures of how much speed varied weren't reliable enough either.5

Its conclusion: speed, the number of items worked through per row, is clearly the best measure of sustained attention in practice. Brickenkamp himself suggested an error-corrected speed score.5

One sheet, 658 characters, 4 minutes 40 seconds

14 × 4714 rows of 47 characters, 658 in total.3
4:40Total testing time, at 20 seconds per row with no break.5
9–60Age range; it can be given one-to-one or in groups.7
BourdonBrickenkamp built it on the classic Bourdon principle of cancellation testing.5
Self-scoringThe answer sheet is self-correcting, with instructions and a practice row on the front.3

1966
Scoring adviceIn 1962 and 1966 Brickenkamp suggested excluding the first row from scoring (the exact rule is cut off in our source).5
2010
d2-RA revised version. In its present form each of the 14 rows has 57 stimuli.1
Digital
Screen versionThe digital d2-R has 14 items of 6 rows × 10 symbols, still 20 seconds each.9
Trials
Outcome measureUsed as a primary outcome in a bipolar-disorder drug trial, and in a study of phone exposure in emergency physicians.6
