20 QUESTIONS · TIMED · SHEET-SCAN DRILL · ABOUT 8 MINUTES

Your brain reads what it expects, not what's there.

Error checking tests, used in clerical and admin hiring, ask you to compare an original with a copy and find what changed. Twenty records, each with one wrong field or none, then scan a whole sheet against the clock. No sign-up, nothing saved.

Which field in the copy doesn't match the original?

FIELDORIGINALCOPY · TAP THE ERROR

Flag every row that doesn't match

Real checking jobs are whole sheets, not single records. Tap each row where the copy differs, then check. Flagging a correct row costs as much as missing a wrong one, so speed alone won't win.

What this error checking test measures, in short

An error checking test measures how quickly and accurately you can compare information and spot differences: swapped digits, misspelt names, wrong dates, letters mistaken for numbers. Employers use them for roles where small mistakes are costly, such as admin, finance, data entry and logistics.

Each record has at most one error; five of the twenty have none. Your time is shown alongside your score because real tests weigh both. The test is our own and not normed.

“the”is where readers miss the most lettersAsked to cross out every t in a passage, people skip far more in common words like “the” than in rare ones, because familiar words are read as whole units. It's called the missing-letter effect.2
1933The Minnesota Clerical Test. One of the first standardised checking tests: pairs of numbers and names marked same or different, against the clock.
1976The missing-letter effect.Alice Healy showed that readers skip letters in common words, so familiar text hides errors best.
TodaySpeed and accuracy, scored together.Modern checking tests count right answers, errors and time, because a fast checker who misses mistakes isn't useful.
TipCheck in chunks.Read numbers in small groups (812 · 50) and say names in your head letter by letter. It defeats the brain's habit of filling in what it expects.
