What Causes Autism?

Autism is not caused by anything that happened after birth: not parenting, not diet, and above all not vaccines. It is rooted in genetics and in how the brain develops from very early on. This page lays out what the evidence actually shows, and takes the vaccine myth apart carefully, because it still causes real harm.

Autism is largely innate and inherited, arising from many genetic factors that shape how the brain develops from very early in life. It is not caused by parenting, upbringing, diet, or vaccines. The genetic contribution is among the strongest of any neurodevelopmental condition, and the vaccine claim, based on a single retracted and fraudulent study, has been comprehensively disproven.

A few terms first

Heritable
Passed on through genes. Autism is highly heritable, meaning inherited factors account for most of why it runs in families.
Polygenic
Influenced by many genes together, each with a small effect, rather than by one single gene.
Innate
Present from birth, built into how a person developed, rather than acquired later from the environment.

How autism actually comes about

Autism does not have a single cause in the way a broken bone has a single cause. It emerges from the interaction of many genetic influences with early brain development. The sequence below is a simplified way to hold the picture together, from inherited risk to a recognisable autistic profile.

  1. Inherited genetic variation

    Autism is strongly heritable. Many common genetic variants of small effect, along with some rarer ones of larger effect, combine to shape how likely it is that a brain develops in an autistic way. This is why autism often runs in families, and why identical twins are far more likely to share it than non-identical twins.

  2. Early brain development

    Those genetic influences guide how the brain grows and wires itself, beginning before birth. Autistic brains develop along a somewhat different path in how regions connect and process information. This is a difference in development, not damage.

  3. A distinctive way of processing

    The result is a brain that handles social information, sensory input, attention, and detail in its own consistent way. This underlies the traits described elsewhere on this site, and it is present from early life whether or not it is recognised early.

  4. Some contributing developmental factors

    Alongside genetics, researchers have identified some factors linked to a modestly raised likelihood of autism, such as significantly older parental age or certain events around pregnancy and birth. These are associations that add small amounts of risk, not direct single causes, and they do not include anything a parent does in day-to-day upbringing.

Why autism runs in families

One of the clearest signals in autism research is that it clusters in families. If one child in a family is autistic, the chance that a sibling is autistic is considerably higher than in the population at large. Identical twins, who share almost all of their DNA, are far more likely to both be autistic than non-identical twins, who share about half. Parents and other relatives of autistic people are also more likely than average to show some autistic traits themselves, even if they were never assessed. Together these patterns point firmly at inheritance.

It is important to read this correctly. Highly heritable does not mean guaranteed, and it does not mean a single faulty gene is handed down. Autism is what geneticists call polygenic: the inherited risk is spread across many genes, each nudging development a little, and it is the combination that matters. Some people also carry rarer genetic differences with larger individual effects. Because so many small influences add up in different ways, siblings can share a genetic tendency yet turn out quite different from one another, which fits the huge variability seen across autistic people.

None of this makes autism a fault to be traced and blamed. Genes shape how a brain is built, and an autistic brain is a natural variation on how human brains can be built. Understanding the genetics is useful mainly because it retires false explanations and lifts blame, not because it turns autism into a defect to be edited out.

The vaccine myth, taken apart

No myth about autism has done more damage than the claim that vaccines cause it. It is worth being precise about why this is false, because the harm, from preventable disease outbreaks to blame heaped on parents, is real.

Vaccines, especially the MMR vaccine, cause autism.

They do not. The idea traces to a single 1998 paper by Andrew Wakefield involving just twelve children. It was later found to be not only wrong but fraudulent: the data were manipulated, the study had undisclosed financial conflicts of interest, it was formally retracted by the journal, and Wakefield was struck off the medical register. Since then, studies following millions of children across multiple countries have looked hard for a link and found none. The scientific and medical consensus is unambiguous: vaccines do not cause autism.

Two further points close the case. First, autism begins in early brain development, before the age at which the traits typically become noticeable, which is around the same age children receive certain vaccines. That timing coincidence is exactly why the myth felt plausible, and exactly why careful studies were needed to show there is no causal link. Second, the alleged mechanisms, whether the MMR vaccine or the preservative thimerosal, have each been investigated and ruled out; removing thimerosal from vaccines did not change autism rates at all.

Why this matters. Chasing a disproven cause pulls attention and money away from what actually helps autistic people, and it wrongly frames autism as a preventable catastrophe rather than a natural part of human variation. Vaccines protect children from serious diseases. The autism they were blamed for is simply a different way of being.

What does not cause autism

For clarity, here are the ideas the evidence has ruled out. If someone tells you one of these caused a child's autism, they are mistaken.

  • Vaccines of any kind, including the MMR vaccine.
  • Parenting style, discipline, or emotional coldness, the discredited refrigerator-mother idea.
  • Screen time, sugar, or a particular diet.
  • Anything a parent could reasonably have done differently.

Autism runs in families, is highly heritable, and reflects early brain development. Understanding that is not just scientifically accurate, it also lifts the weight of blame that so many parents have wrongly carried.
