THE "2W + 60" RULE

Where the folk formula comes from, and where it drifts

If Wonderlic scores have SD 7.5 and IQ has SD 15, each Wonderlic point is worth 2 IQ points. Popular accounts describe 20 as the average score, which gives exactly IQ = 2W + 60; older publisher norms quoted near 21 give 2W + 58. The SD of 7.5 is as commonly cited and not yet checked against the publisher manual. The lines are parallel, two points apart.

The bigger issue is the reference group. Wonderlic norms come from job applicants and employees, not the whole population, and the hard 50 ceiling means no score can map above about IQ 160.
