Four subtests. One g.

The RIAS was designed to be practical, cost-efficient and quick, and to measure general intelligence across the whole lifespan, from age 3 to 94. For most school-age children it takes 25 to 35 minutes.1,7

The core battery.Four intelligence subtests. The two verbal ones give the Verbal Intelligence Index, the two nonverbal ones the Nonverbal Intelligence Index, and all four the Composite Intelligence Index, its estimate of g.1

Built on familiar formats, checked for fairness

ContinuityDesigned so the same measure could be used at every developmental level, from preschool to old age.1
All four load on gThe authors reported that each of the four intelligence subtests is a good measure of general intelligence.1
.98–.99Congruence of the factor structure across gender and ethnicity, well above the .90 criterion.1
Familiar formatsIts six original subtests used formats common in intelligence testing, so examiners found them instantly familiar.7

Three sets of norms

2003RIAS and RISTThe first edition and its screener, normed on 2,438 people aged 3 to 94.6
2015RIAS-2 and RIST-2Kept the six original subtests with updated items, standardized in 2013–14, and added speeded-processing subtests.4
UpdateRIAS-2 NUA normative update. The four-subtest core still gives a highly reliable estimate of g.3

Sources differ on the normative update: one ties it to 2023 US census data, another dates the re-norming to 2026. The RIAS-2's upper age is also given as both 94 and 93:11.3,6,4
