Measure the mind where people differ most.

General psychology studied what all minds share. Binet and Henri's "individual psychology" set out to study the properties that vary from person to person.1 Their tests targeted ten higher faculties and were chosen from the areas where individual differences were greatest.3

Two kinds of mental test in the 1890s

TARGETElementary processes: grip, touch, reaction time.Higher processes: memory, imagery, comprehension, suggestibility, judgement.6
SELECTIONMeasures borrowed from the physiology laboratory.Tests chosen from the areas where individual differences were greatest.3
EQUIPMENTDynamometers, compasses, weighted boxes, timing keys.No elaborate apparatus. The full series took about an hour and a half.2
LEFT OUTComplex mental work.Word association, though it was a popular method at the time.6

The programme, faculty by faculty

The paper gave explicit directions for each area. Where the specific 1895 tasks are documented, they're listed. The rest are described as the paper defined them.2,3

TRY IT · MEMORY FOR IDEAS VS MEMORY FOR WORDS

Read a short story once, then answer six questions

In Binet and Henri's memory studies, children recalled general ideas better than exact words. The gap widened with delay, and the more central an idea, the more likely it was remembered.4 Three questions below test the gist and three test the exact wording.

Early on a rainy Tuesday, a delivery boy carrying three loaves of bread slipped on the wet steps of the town hall. A baker's apprentice who was passing helped him to his feet, and together they gathered up the bread before the market opened.

1899: seven Cornell students

Stella Sharp, a Cornell graduate student, gave the tests to seven fellow psychology students. She found little meaningful pattern, and subtests meant to measure the same ability didn't agree with each other.4 Binet's own results were similarly disappointing.4

Still, Sharp's report argued that complex processes were worth more than elementary ones. Together with Wissler's 1901 result, it helped end the sensorimotor programme.10

Seven adults from a single graduate programme is a tiny, homogeneous sample. It's the same range-restriction problem that later undercut Wissler's much larger Columbia study.

From the programme to the scale

1894Suggestibility in childrenBinet and Henri publish a pioneering study of natural suggestibility in schoolchildren.9
1895The programmeIndividual psychology is laid out in the journal Binet co-founded and edited, L'Année psychologique.8
1899Sharp's testA small Cornell trial finds the subtests don't hang together.4
1903His daughtersBinet publishes experiments on his two daughters, framing intelligence as an object for experimental study.7
1905The Binet-Simon scaleJudgement, memory and understanding become a practical test for children.6
