The Evidence on Influence: Settled, Mixed, and Contested

The psychology of persuasion attracts a lot of confident claims, some solid and some sold. A good deal of it rests on genuinely strong evidence: the classic principles replicate, and the idea that we run on mental shortcuts is bedrock. Other parts are more uncertain than the popular telling admits, and a noisy fringe, especially certain dark persuasion and NLP claims, is not well supported at all. This page sorts the field into settled, mixed, and contested.

The core science of persuasion is settled: the classic principles replicate widely, and the reliance on mental shortcuts is one of psychology's most robust findings. What is mixed is the detail: exact effect sizes, how much technique matters versus the messenger, and how far the effects hold across cultures. What is genuinely weak, and should be treated with caution, is the pop-psychology fringe, especially neuro-linguistic programming and grand claims of covert mind control, which lack a sound evidence base.

How influence is actually studied

To judge which claims are strong, it helps to know where the evidence comes from. The psychology of influence rests on several independent methods, and the claims that count as settled are those where different methods agree.

Method 1

Field experiments

Researchers test compliance in real settings, door-to-door requests, restaurant tips, charity drives, comparing outcomes when a technique is used against a control. This is how the foot-in-the-door and door-in-the-face effects were first shown, and it grounds the principles in behaviour, not just self-report.

Method 2

Laboratory studies

Controlled experiments isolate a single lever, varying one factor while holding others constant. The classic conformity work on social proof came from the lab, letting researchers see how a group's stated view bends an individual's judgement even against plain evidence.

Method 3

Meta-analysis

Because any single study can mislead, reviewers pool many studies of the same effect to estimate its true average size and how consistent it is. Meta-analyses are where inflated single-study claims get cut down to a realistic figure, and where cultural and situational variation becomes visible.

Method 4

Replication projects

Large collaborative efforts re-run well-known findings to see whether they hold. Social psychology's replication reckoning of the past decade has confirmed some classic effects, trimmed others, and retired a few, which is exactly why effect sizes now belong in the mixed pile rather than the settled one.

No single study settles anything. Confidence comes from convergence: when field experiments, lab work, and meta-analysis point the same way, and the effect survives replication, a claim is on firm ground. Where the methods conflict or the replications wobble, honesty means calling the question open.

Settled: what the evidence firmly supports

These claims rest on decades of research across independent methods and are not seriously disputed among mainstream researchers.

Settled

The classic persuasion principles are real and replicable. Reciprocity, commitment and consistency, social proof, authority, liking, and scarcity have each been demonstrated repeatedly, in the field and the lab. The foot-in-the-door and door-in-the-face techniques in particular have a long, replicated track record. There is genuine debate about how large each effect is, but that they exist and reliably nudge behaviour is well established.

Settled

Heuristics drive much of everyday decision-making. The broader idea that people rely on fast mental shortcuts rather than exhaustively weighing every choice is one of the best-supported findings in all of psychology, developed across a large body of work on judgement and decision-making. This is the foundation the whole subject sits on: persuasion works because these shortcuts exist, and they exist because they are usually useful.

Settled

People conform to real and perceived social pressure. Classic conformity research showed that many people will publicly agree with an obviously incorrect majority, and that we look to others to define what is correct when we are uncertain. The strength of the effect depends on the situation, but the basic phenomenon, that the apparent views and behaviour of others shape our own, is thoroughly documented.

Mixed or evolving: where the science is still moving

These questions are actively researched and partly answered, but the estimates move with method, or the data are incomplete. Here the honest posture is confidence about the broad shape and caution about the details.

Mixed

The exact size of each effect. Popular accounts sometimes imply that a persuasion technique reliably flips a large share of people. In reality, effect sizes vary considerably across studies, and social psychology's replication efforts have trimmed several once-confident figures. The effects are real, but they are typically modest nudges rather than switches, and any specific percentage should be read as an average with a wide spread around it.

Mixed

How far the principles hold across cultures. Much foundational research was conducted in a narrow slice of the world, often with Western university students. Later work suggests the principles broadly generalise but that their relative strength shifts with culture: social proof and unity, for example, may weigh differently in more collectivist settings. The universal core looks robust; the fine calibration across cultures is still being mapped.

Mixed

Technique versus messenger and context. How much of persuasion is the specific technique, and how much is who delivers it, to whom, and in what situation? Evidence suggests context and relationship often matter as much as the lever itself, which is why the same tactic can succeed in one setting and fall flat in another. Disentangling the technique from everything around it is genuinely hard, and remains an active question.

Contested or unsupported: treat with caution

Here the issue is not a live scientific debate among careful researchers so much as a gap between confident popular claims and thin or absent evidence. These are the parts of the influence world most worth approaching sceptically.

Weak Evidence

Neuro-linguistic programming as a persuasion method. NLP markets specific techniques, reading eye movements, mirroring body language, using particular verbal patterns, as keys to influencing people. Despite decades of interest, reviews have repeatedly failed to find good support for its core claims, and reputable summaries treat NLP as lacking a sound scientific basis. It is worth naming this plainly: persuasion advice built on NLP should be regarded with strong caution, however slick its presentation.

Overstated

Dark persuasion and covert mind control. A profitable corner of pop psychology promises secret techniques that let a trained operator make anyone do almost anything. This overstates what the science shows. Real influence is probabilistic and resistible; it tilts the odds rather than commanding behaviour, and awareness reduces its power. The dramatic mind-control framing is a marketing story, and treating it as fact tends to make people more anxious and, ironically, more suggestible, not less.

Contested

Subliminal persuasion. The idea that messages flashed below conscious awareness can drive meaningful behaviour, such as making you buy a particular product, has a long and largely debunked history; the most famous early demonstration was later admitted to be fabricated. Careful research finds that very subtle priming effects can exist under tight conditions but are weak and unreliable, nowhere near the powerful hidden-persuasion of popular legend. Sweeping claims here are not supported.

The honest summary is unglamorous: the classic principles are real but modest, they nudge rather than compel, and the flashier the claim of near-magical persuasive power, the weaker the evidence behind it tends to be.

Reading persuasion claims critically

Most misleading coverage of influence does one of two things: it takes a modest, well-supported effect and inflates it into a superpower, or it dresses an unsupported technique in scientific language. A few habits help you tell solid from sold.

Ask which pile the claim belongs in. A claim that reciprocity or social proof shapes behaviour is drawing on settled science. A precise, dramatic figure, "this trick works on 90 percent of people", is treating a mixed question as if it were settled. And a promise of secret, near-irresistible techniques, especially anything leaning on NLP or covert mind control, sits in the weak-evidence pile no matter how confidently it is sold. Notice whether a source cites replicated findings or a single study, whether it admits that effects are modest and resistible, and whether it distinguishes a real nudge from a fantasy of control. The more balanced the source, the closer it usually is to the truth.
