The settled findings are modest but real: non-verbal cues dominate when we judge emotion, active listening improves outcomes, and clarity plus feedback reduce misunderstanding. What is mixed is how much of meaning is non-verbal in general, since the answer swings with context. What is contested, or plainly wrong, are the confident numbers and tricks: the seven percent rule is a misquotation, and most single-cue "body-language tells" do not reliably predict what people think they do.
The honest science of communication is quieter than the bestsellers suggest. Its firmest lessons are that listening works and that clear feedback helps, not that a secret code of gestures unlocks the human mind.
How communication is actually studied
Claims about communication come from several different kinds of research, and knowing which is behind a claim tells you how much weight it can bear. The strongest conclusions are the ones where independent methods agree.
Controlled experiments
Researchers stage exchanges where they vary one thing, for example making tone and words conflict, and measure how people judge the result. This is where the Mehrabian figures came from. Experiments are precise but often narrow, so their findings do not always generalise beyond the exact situation tested.
Observation and coding
Analysts record real conversations, then systematically code behaviours such as interruptions, gaze, and repair moves. This captures communication as it actually happens, at the cost of tangled variables that are hard to pull apart.
Field and applied studies
In clinics, classrooms, and workplaces, researchers link communication training or style to outcomes such as patient satisfaction, error rates, or team performance. These test whether a skill matters in the real world, which is where active listening earns its strong support.
Meta-analysis
By pooling many studies, meta-analyses estimate how large and how consistent an effect really is. They are how we know that some popular single-cue claims, such as reliable lie-detection from body language, shrink to near nothing once all the evidence is combined.
A few figures, read carefully
Numbers in this field are unusually easy to misuse, so treat these as pointers to a finding, not as precise laws. The first is famous precisely because it is so often quoted out of context.
Settled: what the evidence firmly supports
These claims rest on convergent evidence and are not seriously disputed. Note how modest they are: this is the shape of honest findings, useful but unglamorous.

The idea traces to Carl Rogers, and while techniques vary, the core claim that being genuinely heard changes an interaction holds up robustly across settings.
Clarity and feedback reduce misunderstanding. Messages that are concrete and specific are understood more accurately than vague ones, and building in a feedback step, having the receiver confirm or paraphrase, reliably catches errors that would otherwise slip through. This is unglamorous but one of the most dependable levers there is, which is why fields where mistakes are costly, from aviation to surgery, formalise read-backs and confirmation into their communication procedures.
Mixed: where the answer depends on context
These questions have real answers, but the answer changes with the situation, so any single number is misleading. Honesty here means resisting the urge to state a fixed figure.
How much of meaning is non-verbal in general. There is no fixed share, because it depends entirely on the message. For an emotionally loaded exchange, non-verbal cues carry a great deal. For directions, a technical explanation, or a factual report, the words carry almost everything and tone adds little. Any universal percentage, the seven percent rule included, is meaningless because it averages over situations that genuinely differ. The right answer is "it depends, and here is what it depends on."
How much non-verbal behaviour is universal versus cultural. A few basic emotional expressions appear to be broadly recognised across cultures, which suggests some shared foundation. But display rules, gesture meanings, comfortable distance, eye-contact norms, and the value placed on directness vary widely, and the same behaviour can read very differently across settings. Which parts are universal and which are learned is an active research area, and confident claims in either direction overstate what is settled.
Contested or wrong: the confident claims to distrust
Here sit the claims that sound authoritative and sell books but do not survive scrutiny. The first is the single most repeated error in the entire subject.
Communication is 7 percent words, 38 percent tone, and 55 percent body language, so words are almost irrelevant.
These numbers come from two small experiments Albert Mehrabian published in 1967. In them, people heard a single word spoken in a tone that either matched or clashed with its meaning, or saw a facial expression that did the same, and were asked to judge how the speaker felt. The percentages describe only how listeners weighed the channels in that narrow task, judging feelings from conflicting cues about liking. They were never a formula for communication as a whole. Mehrabian himself has repeatedly warned against the popular misuse, pointing out that the figures do not apply unless a speaker is talking about their feelings or attitudes and the channels disagree. Applied to a lecture, a set of instructions, or any factual message, the rule is simply false: there, words carry most of the meaning. Whenever you see the seven percent figure offered as a law of all communication, treat it as a red flag that the source has not checked its origin.
Specific body-language "tells". Popular guides claim that crossed arms signal defensiveness, that touching the nose betrays a lie, or that a particular posture reveals confidence. The evidence for reading individual gestures as reliable indicators is weak. Non-verbal cues are genuinely informative in aggregate and in context, but any single cue is ambiguous, differs between people, and is easily produced by mundane causes, cold arms, an itch, nerves, so confident one-cue readings are unreliable.
Detecting lies from behaviour. The belief that liars give themselves away through gaze, fidgeting, or micro-expressions is widespread, including among professionals, but meta-analyses find human lie-detection accuracy hovers near chance, around fifty-four percent. There is no reliable behavioural "tell" for deception, the cues people trust are mostly signs of stress rather than lying, and training has produced only small and inconsistent gains. Claims of near-certain lie-spotting from body language are not supported.
Reading communication claims critically
The pattern across this page is consistent: the modest findings are solid, and the dramatic ones tend to collapse. A few habits help you tell them apart.
Be most suspicious of the most confident, most quotable claims. A precise universal percentage, a single gesture that "always means" something, a foolproof way to catch a liar, these are the shape of overreach. Ask what kind of study a claim rests on, whether it is being stretched far beyond the situation it was tested in, and whether it acknowledges that context matters. The seven percent rule fails every one of those tests, which is exactly why it is the textbook example of a communication myth. The trustworthy findings are quieter: listen well, be clear, check that your meaning landed.
