Convert IQ ↔ ASVAB AFQT
How the conversion works
IQ and ASVAB AFQT scores are normalised on bell-curve distributions. The conversion maps a person's standing in one distribution to the equivalent standing in the other.
- IQ: mean 100, standard deviation 15.
- ASVAB AFQT: reported as a percentile rank against the 1997 reference sample of 18-23-year-old Americans, so it spans 1-99 with a built-in median of 50. The underlying ASVAB sub-test scores correlate with IQ at around 0.8-0.9.
IQ-equivalent = (target − meantarget) / SDtarget × 15 + 100
target-equivalent = (IQ − 100) / 15 × SDtarget + meantarget
Common IQ ↔ ASVAB AFQT reference table
| IQ | ASVAB AFQT | Percentile |
|---|---|---|
| 80 | 9 | ~9th |
| 90 | 25 | ~25th |
| 100 | 50 | ~50th |
| 110 | 75 | ~75th |
| 120 | 91 | ~91st |
| 130 | 98 | ~98th |
Important caveats
- The AFQT is essentially a percentile rank on the cognitive composite of the ASVAB. Because the AFQT is reported as a percentile rather than a standard score, the conversion is direct via the IQ-to-percentile mapping. Military branches have AFQT minimums (e.g., Army 31, Marines 32, Navy 35, Air Force 36) that correspond to IQ ranges roughly 85-90 and above.
- Extreme-tail conversions are less reliable because both tests have fewer calibration cases there.
