IQ to ASVAB AFQT Score Converter

Convert IQ ↔ ASVAB AFQT

How the conversion works

IQ and ASVAB AFQT scores are normalised on bell-curve distributions. The conversion maps a person's standing in one distribution to the equivalent standing in the other.

  • IQ: mean 100, standard deviation 15.
  • ASVAB AFQT: reported as a percentile rank against the 1997 reference sample of 18-23-year-old Americans, so it spans 1-99 with a built-in median of 50. The underlying ASVAB sub-test scores correlate with IQ at around 0.8-0.9.

IQ-equivalent = (target − meantarget) / SDtarget × 15 + 100
target-equivalent = (IQ − 100) / 15 × SDtarget + meantarget

Important caveats

  • The AFQT is essentially a percentile rank on the cognitive composite of the ASVAB. Because the AFQT is reported as a percentile rather than a standard score, the conversion is direct via the IQ-to-percentile mapping. Military branches have AFQT minimums (e.g., Army 31, Marines 32, Navy 35, Air Force 36) that correspond to IQ ranges roughly 85-90 and above.
  • Extreme-tail conversions are less reliable because both tests have fewer calibration cases there.
