Early life and education

Samuel Benjamin Harris was born April 9, 1967, in Los Angeles, California. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Stanford University, and later completed a PhD in cognitive neuroscience at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where his doctoral research examined the neural basis of belief, disbelief, and uncertainty.

These are documented academic credentials, and they are the most reliable record of his intellectual training. They are not, however, IQ scores. A philosophy degree and a neuroscience doctorate describe what a person studied and completed; they do not translate into a normed position on an intelligence test, and no such position has ever been published for Harris.
