About This Test

Test your feel for the physical world: continents, rivers, mountains, oceans, and where things sit on the map.

This test covers physical and place geography together. You will identify continents and countries, locate major mountain ranges, rivers, deserts, and seas, and reason about which places border or lie near one another. It includes famous landmarks and natural features alongside questions about relative position, direction, and scale, so it rewards a genuine mental map of the planet rather than the memorisation of a single fact sheet or capital list.

Expect to sort out which ocean lies off a given coast, which countries a great river passes through, where a mountain range divides two regions, and how climate zones shift as you travel from the equator toward the poles. Mount Everest is the highest point above sea level, while the Nile and the Amazon are the two contenders for longest river. The Pacific is the largest and deepest ocean, and the Sahara is the largest hot desert.

Asia is both the biggest continent and the most populous, and Russia spans eleven time zones. Only about a third of Earth's surface is land, and the equator, tropics, and poles set the broad pattern of the world's climates. The Dead Sea lies well below sea level, Antarctica is the coldest and driest continent, and the Andes form the longest continental mountain range on the planet.

The Mediterranean nearly encloses on itself, Greenland is the largest island, and the Ring of Fire around the Pacific concentrates most of the world's earthquakes and active volcanoes. You will do best if you think spatially, picturing how coastlines, mountain ranges, and river basins fit together, instead of treating each place as an isolated name on a list.

Solid geography underpins your understanding of trade, climate, migration, and conflict, all of which follow the shape of the land and sea. Your results show which regions and feature types are fuzzy for you, pointing to the parts of the map worth filling in with a bit of focused study. Tracing a single continent in detail, its rivers, ranges, and borders, tends to lock in far more than a quick glance at a world map ever could.

What the geography test covers

Continents and countries

Identifying and locating the continents and the nations within them, and reasoning about which places border or lie near one another on the map.

Rivers, ranges, and deserts

Locating major features such as the Nile, the Amazon, the Andes, and the Sahara, and knowing which regions a great river or range passes through.

Oceans and seas

Working out which ocean lies off a given coast, from the vast Pacific to enclosed waters like the Mediterranean and the low-lying Dead Sea.

Position, scale, and climate

Reasoning about relative position, direction, and scale, and how climate zones shift from the equator through the tropics toward the poles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about this assessment

Mount Everest, in the Himalayas on the border of Nepal and China, is the highest point above sea level. Its summit reaches into thin air where climbers usually need bottled oxygen, making it the traditional benchmark for the top of the world.

The Nile in Africa and the Amazon in South America are the two contenders for the longest river. Different measurement methods reach different conclusions, so both are frequently cited, and the answer depends on exactly where each river's source is judged to begin.

The Pacific is the largest and deepest ocean, covering more area than all the world's land combined. Its deepest point lies in the Mariana Trench. The Pacific also hosts the Ring of Fire, where most of the planet's earthquakes and active volcanoes occur.

Only about a third of Earth's surface is land, with the rest covered by ocean. Asia is both the largest and most populous continent, while Antarctica, the coldest and driest, holds a vast share of the world's fresh water locked up as ice.
