NUMBER CONSTRAINTS · ELIMINATION

Every clue crosses numbers off.

No data tables and no hidden series. Each puzzle gives a few facts about unknown numbers, and only one value fits them all. The work is elimination, not arithmetic.

What is a deductive numbers test?

A deductive numbers test gives you clues or constraints about unknown numbers, such as sums, differences, digits or divisibility, and asks you to work out the single value that satisfies all of them.

It sits between numerical reasoning and deductive reasoning: the maths is simple, but you must combine the constraints logically and rule out every alternative. Shape equations, digit puzzles and age problems are common formats.

Shape equations, one step at a time

Start with the line that has only one unknown. Each value you find unlocks the next line.

Six shortcuts that eliminate fast

You rarely need full algebra. These checks usually cut four options to one.
Odd or evenodd + odd = evenIf a sum is odd, exactly one part is odd. Halves the options instantly.
Digit sum÷3 or ÷9 → digit sum ÷3 or ÷947□ divides by 9 only if 11 + □ does: □ = 7.
Last digits÷4 → last two digits ÷41,316 divides by 4 because 16 does.
Sum & differencelarger = (S + D) ÷ 2Two numbers adding to 20 and differing by 6: (20 + 6) ÷ 2 = 13.
Consecutive numbersmiddle = total ÷ countThree in a row adding to 51 have 17 in the middle.
Lowest common multiple÷a and ÷b → multiple of LCMDivisible by 4 and 7 means a multiple of 28.

WORK BACKWARDS

The answer is already on the screen

With four options, testing each against the clues is often faster than solving. Pólya called this "working backwards". Start with the clue that rejects the most options.

Example: a 2-digit number, digits sum to 11, tens digit is 3 more than units. Options 47, 83, 74, 65.
474 + 7 = 114 − 7 = −3
838 + 3 = 118 − 3 = 5
747 + 4 = 117 − 4 = 3
656 + 5 = 116 − 5 = 1
