Five indexes. Critics found four.

The fifth children's Wechsler split Perceptual Reasoning into Visual Spatial and Fluid Reasoning, bringing it in line with CHC theory.10 Independent reanalyses of the same norm data kept finding four factors and a dominant general factor.6

Two verbal, one visual spatial, two fluid, one working memory and one speed subtest. Compared with the WISC-IV, working memory and speed carry less weight.2

21 subtests on three shelves

A standard administration uses the ten primary subtests: seven for the Full Scale IQ and three more to complete five two-subtest indexes. Ancillary and complementary indexes regroup the rest for specific clinical questions.1

Three are new: Visual Puzzles, Figure Weights and Picture Span. Picture Completion was dropped to reduce the emphasis on speed, and Word Reasoning was dropped as redundant.1

All five are new. They target processes important to reading, maths and writing, and feed the Naming Speed, Symbol Translation and Storage and Retrieval indexes.1

Working memory stops being all spoken

In the WISC-IV, both working memory index subtests were read aloud. The WISC-V replaced one of them with a visual task.2

Digit Span now asks for numbers in ascending order as well as forwards and backwards, a condition adapted from the WAIS-IV.12 Letter-Number Sequencing stayed on as a secondary subtest.12

The publisher's model: five primary indexesVisual Spatial and Fluid Reasoning become separate indexes, which is meant to align the test with CHC theory, where the two are distinct broad abilities, and to give more precise diagnostic information.10

Subtest placements follow the publisher's primary-index structure.3 In the four-factor view, Visual Spatial and Fluid Reasoning are merged back into Perceptual Reasoning, as in the independent studies.5,8 Omega values are ranges reported across several independent analyses.9

2,200 children in 33 four-month steps

The sample was stratified by age, sex, race/ethnicity, parental education and region.6 It was divided into one age band per four months of age, with about 67 children in each.5
