Test Coverage

The Portuguese language proficiency test evaluates your ability in four key skill areas: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Each section is designed to reflect real-life communication scenarios, testing practical language use as well as grammatical knowledge.

The listening section includes understanding conversations, announcements, and short talks. The reading section covers comprehension of texts such as articles, advertisements, and emails. Writing tasks range from short messages to essays, while speaking involves answering questions and participating in dialogues.

CEFR Levels Explained

The test results align with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which categorizes language proficiency into six levels from A1 to C2.

  • A1–A2 (Basic User): Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases.
  • B1–B2 (Independent User): Can handle everyday situations and produce simple connected text on familiar topics.
  • C1–C2 (Proficient User): Can understand demanding texts and express themselves fluently and spontaneously.

Preparation

To prepare effectively, focus on improving all four language skills. Practice listening with Portuguese podcasts and videos, read newspapers and books, write essays or journal entries, and engage in spoken practice with native speakers or language partners.

Use official practice materials and sample tests to familiarize yourself with the test format and timing. Consistent study and immersion will boost your confidence and performance.

What to Expect on Test Day

The test is usually administered in a controlled environment, either at a testing center or online with supervision. You will be required to complete all sections within a set time limit.

Bring valid identification and arrive early. Instructions will be provided before each section. The speaking portion may be recorded or conducted in person with an examiner.

Scoring Methodology

Your performance is scored individually for each section and then combined to determine your overall proficiency level. Scores correspond to CEFR levels, with detailed descriptors for each skill.

For example, a score indicating B2 means you are an independent user who can understand complex texts and communicate with a degree of fluency and spontaneity.
