Number sequences measure inductive reasoning with numbers: detecting the rule that links the terms, arithmetic, geometric, squares, alternating patterns, or Fibonacci-like growth, and applying it to predict the next value. A strong result reflects rapid hypothesis generation and testing rather than calculation, since the arithmetic itself is usually simple once the rule is found.
Because they tap rule induction rather than learned facts, number series appear in nearly every IQ battery and load heavily on fluid intelligence.
