Eight scores instead of one.

The Differential Aptitude Tests gave school counsellors a profile across eight separate aptitudes, from verbal reasoning to spelling. It was built for educational and vocational guidance of high-school students.3,4

The eight tests

The 1990 fifth edition kept the same eight aptitudes as the first. Item counts and times below are for that edition; the source doesn't give figures for the last three.7,6

The only test that wasn't multiple-choice

Every other DAT test was multiple-choice. This one was a race: find the combination that matches the underlined one. The 1990 version had two 100-item parts of three minutes each.4,6

Part of the multiple-aptitude turn

Groundwork for multi-ability batteries began in the 1930s. The DAT arrived the same year as the government's General Aptitude Test Battery, two decades before the military's ASVAB.8 In 1948 Bennett and J. E. Doppelt published a paper on evaluating pairs of tests for guidance use: the logic of reading a profile.2

The Army built its own multi-aptitude battery at almost the same moment. Where the DAT gave a counsellor a profile to discuss, the ACB turned test scores into aptitude-area composites that routed recruits into groups of Army jobs from 1949.
