Test Coverage

The Norwegian language proficiency test assesses your abilities in the four main language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Each section is designed to measure how well you understand and use Norwegian in real-life situations.

The test includes:

CEFR Levels

The test results correspond to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) levels from A1 to C2, which describe your proficiency from beginner to mastery.

  • A1-A2: Basic user – Can understand and use everyday expressions.
  • B1-B2: Independent user – Can communicate with some fluency and spontaneity.
  • C1-C2: Proficient user – Can express ideas fluently and understand complex texts.

Preparation

To prepare for the Norwegian proficiency test, it is recommended to:

  • Practice all four language skills regularly.
  • Use official practice materials and past exams.

Consistent practice will improve your confidence and test performance.

What to Expect

The test typically takes between 2 to 3 hours and is divided into separate sections. You will complete listening and reading tasks first, followed by writing and speaking components.

Speaking tests are either conducted live with an examiner or via a recorded format, depending on the testing center.

Scoring Methodology

Your performance in each section is scored separately and then combined to determine your overall CEFR level. Scores are based on accuracy, fluency, comprehension, and appropriate use of language.

Each skill is weighted equally, and minimum scores in all areas are required to achieve a passing level.

For example, a candidate with strong reading and listening skills but weak speaking skills may receive a lower overall level.
