Basic Negation with "ne...pas"
In French, the most common way to express negation is by placing ne before the conjugated verb and pas after it. This construction is equivalent to "not" in English.
Example:
Je ne parle pas anglais.
Zhuh nuh parl pah ahn-glay.
I do not speak English.
Note that in spoken French, the ne is often dropped, but in formal writing it is always included.
Negation with Object Pronouns
When using object pronouns, the negation still surrounds the conjugated verb, but the pronouns come directly before the verb inside the negation.
Example:
Je ne le vois pas.
Zhuh nuh luh vwah pah.
I do not see him/it.
Here, le is the direct object pronoun placed between ne and the verb vois.
Other Negative Expressions
Besides pas, French uses several other negative words that combine with ne to create different negations:
| Negative Expression | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ne...jamais | never | Il ne fume jamais. |
| ne...plus | no longer, not anymore | Nous ne travaillons plus ici. |
| ne...rien | nothing | Elle ne dit rien. |
| ne...personne | nobody, no one | Je ne vois personne. |
Il ne mange jamais de viande.
Eel nuh mahnzh zhah-meh duh vyahnt.
He never eats meat.
Negation in the Past Tense
When negating sentences in compound past tenses like the passé composé, the negation surrounds the auxiliary verb (être or avoir), not the past participle.
Example:
Elle n'a pas vu le film.
El nah pah voo luh feelm.
She did not see the movie.
Here, ne and pas surround a, the auxiliary verb. The past participle vu is outside the negation.
Negation with Infinitives
When negating an infinitive verb, place ne pas before the infinitive, especially after modal verbs or expressions.
Example:
Je préfère ne pas répondre.
Zhuh pray-fehr nuh pah ray-pohn-druh.
I prefer not to answer.
Notice that the negation surrounds the infinitive répondre, not the main verb préfère.
Exceptions and Variations
In spoken French, the ne is often dropped, especially in informal contexts, leaving only the negative adverb like pas.
Je sais pas.
Zhuh say pah.
I don't know.
However, in formal writing and speech, the full negation with ne is required.
Also, some expressions such as ne...que mean "only" and are a form of restriction rather than negation:
Il ne mange que des légumes.
Eel nuh mahnzh kuh day lay-gum.
He only eats vegetables.
Practice Examples
Try identifying the negative expressions in these sentences and translate them:
Nous ne comprenons rien à cette leçon.
Noo nuh kom-pruh-non ree-ahn ah set luh-son.
We understand nothing of this lesson.
Tu ne veux jamais aller là-bas.
Too nuh vuh zhah-meh ah-lay lah-bah.
You never want to go there.
Elle n'a plus de temps libre.
El nah ploo duh tahn leebruh.
She no longer has free time.
Rewrite these sentences in the negative form using ne...pas if necessary:
- Je parle français.
- Ils arrivent à l'heure.
- Tu aimes le chocolat.
Tips for Remembering Rules
- Always place ne before the conjugated verb and the negative word (pas, jamais, rien, etc.) after it.
- When using compound tenses, negate the auxiliary verb, not the past participle.
- Remember that object pronouns come between ne and the verb.
- Practice reading aloud to get comfortable with the pronunciation of the negation parts.
- Be aware of informal spoken French dropping the ne, but always include it in writing.
- Learn the meaning of different negative expressions to use the correct one depending on context.
